Truth Comes in Covers: The Swell Season

Here is the Swell Season covering my favorite track from my favorite record of all time.

I've sung this many times in the quiet dark of my basement trying to sound as good as they do here, and failing miserably. Every. Single. Time.

The video isn't coming up, but I'm intrigued: What is your favorite album off all time, and what is your favorite track on it?

Love your blog. I enjoy the way you write about music.

Spencer,

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm not sure why the video isn't working for you. It seems okay on my end. Here is a link to the AV Club page: http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-swell-season-covers-neutral-milk-hotel%2C38877/

My favorite album (the one I could listen to front to back every single day and never tire) is Neutral Milk Hotel: In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. And "Two-Headed Boy" is a perfect song.

How about you? Do you have a favorite?

Thanks for the link. I'll watch when I get home. There might be something about the A.V. Club site that my work administrator is frowning upon.

Anyway, to answer your question, my stock answer is The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds. I know, not very interesting. Other favorites are Nick Drake - Pink Moon and anything by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Are you going to do an album list?

And, BTW, I live in SLC also, and I found your blog a few years ago via some former work compatriots (Lacey J. and Brad K.) whom I didn't get to know well enough, regrettably.

I love Pet Sounds! That is a great album, therefore "interesting"!

I haven't listened to Pink Moon in ages, but of course went through a Nick Drake phase. Terrific songwriter. If he is a favorite of yours you should definintely check out Laura Marling's album "I Speak Because I Can". There is something very Nick Drake to it, but she is her own animal and very very talented.

I wish I knew Lacey and Brad better. They are friends of friends, so I feel like I know them better "virtually" than in actuality. Very good people.

Oh, also, I doubt I'll do an album list this year. I would most likely point people to the albums whose songs I mentioned on my list. I figured mentioning my favorite songs would be more likely to expose people to new music than mentioning the album (singles are back, as are short attention spans).

My favorite albums this year were:
LCD Soundsystem "This Is Happening"
Joanna Newsom "Have One on Me"
Sufjan Stevens "The Age of Adz"
Beach House "Teen Dream"

I also up there were BSS and The Walkmen.

Aeroplane is too my favorite album, rivaled only by Catharsis' Passion. I've been at your blog for some time now and it's opened up a lot for me, not least of which is really hearing Stevens at last. Cheers.
